Basic Training for Adults

Adult leaders start their training learning the basics of Boy Scouting. These courses teach how the Troop is run and the role of the adult in the running of the Troop. Adults are registered as Committe members (by default) or as Assistant Scoutmasters (with approval of the Scoutmaster). The training for each position is as follows:

After completing the training for which the adult is registered, they are awarded a "Trained" strip to wear under their Badge of Office/Position Patch.

Description of Basic Training Courses

Fast Start- Video based training; this is the introduction to Scouting for adults. . This is also available online at http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/faststart/. Also available at Merit Badge Fairs, University of Scouting (in February).

Youth Protection Training ;Official BSA course covering child abuse. The course is offered before Roundtable several times per year, at Merit Badge Fairs, and is also offered at University of Scouting (in February). This training lasts one hour. Troop 80 requires this training before an Adult Leader can go camping with the Troop. Must be renewed every three years. VIRTUS Training- This is a child abuse prevention program that is required of Adult Leaders whose Troops are affiliated with the Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston.This is in addition to the Youth Protection Training described above. New Leader Essentials; initial training for all new adult leaders serving youth in the Boy Scouts of America. This training lasts one-and-a-half to two hours This training is available at Merit Badge Fairs and at other Golden Arrow District training sessions throughout the year. Troop Committee Challenge; For Troop Committee members. This training lasts three hours. Official basic training for all Troop Committee members, offers a hands-on approach to training. When combined with New Leader Essentials, a Committee Member is considered fully trained, and may wear the "Trained" strip under the Committee Member Badge of Office. This training is available at Merit Badge Fairs and at other Golden Arrow District training sessions throughout the year, as well as University of Scouting. Prerequisite: New Leader Essentials.

Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training; for Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters. This training is divided into three sections, each lasting three hours. Sessions cover the role of the Scoutmaster, the outdoor program & advancement program, and program planning & troop administration. Available at specific times throughout the year.Prerequisite: New Leader Essentials.

Adult Leader Outdoor Training- Weekend training covering the basic outdoor skills that Scouts learn, including camping, cooking, fire building, first aid, etc. After completion of this course, a Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster is considered fully trained, and may wear the "Trained" strip under the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Badge of Office. Prerequisite: Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training.
