The Boy Scouts of America is a non-profit organization. The
local Councils, Districts, and Troops must raise the funds necessary
to operate their programs. It is required that Scouts participate
in fund raising to keep Scouting affordable. Scouts can earn "Camping
Credits" during most fund raisers.
Friends of Scouting: The Sam Houston Area Council holds
an annual fund drive known as Friends of Scouting (FOS). The money
raised during the FOS fund drive stays in the council and pays
for camping facilities and programs that directly benefit the
Scouts in this area.
Homemade Donut Sale:. Troop 80 puts on a Homemade Donut
Sale, usually twice a year, to raise money for the Troop Treasury.
The Scouts sell, and the parents make the donuts. It is a Thursday
evening, all day Friday, and Saturday morning activity with the
parents working 2 to 4 hour shifts. Every Scout family is expected
to help with the sale. A portion of each Scout's sales is credited
toward his summer camp fee. Parents of the new Scouts are responsible
for organizing this event.
Popcorn Sale: Troop 80 also participates in the annual
BSA Popcorn sale in addition to or in lieu of the donut sale.
This benefits the Sam Area Houston Council as well as the Troop.
Scouts can earn prizes in addition to earning money for Troop
activities.
Scout Fair Tickets: Ticket sales bring in funds
for Troop 80 and for the Council. Boys are awarded prizes for
ticket sales. The boys are permitted to wear their uniforms while
selling and many families join Scouting after attending our Scout
fair.
The Scout House Committee: This committee is made up of
representatives of the Girl Scout, Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venture
units that use the building. They hold several fundraisers to
provide funds to maintain/improve the building. These traditionally
include a monthly aluminum can drive and in the past have included
a car wash, a spring fertilizer sale, and Christmas nut sale.
Supporting these fundraisers helps secure our meeting facility.
St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Bazaar: Troop 80 thanks
its sponsor by operating a hamburger and hot dog booth at its
annual bazaar. The Bazaar is held the first weekend in May. The
Troop considers this a good will gesture, does not receive any
of the proceeds, nor are Scouts awarded Service Hours for participating.
Scouts and parents are generally asked to work a 2 to 3 hour shift.
