Board of Review- a board of the Troop Committee that oversees the progress of a Scout (p. 20)
Bug Juice- flavored fruit punch, similar to Kool-aid.
Camping Credit- a dollar credit that the Troop Treasurer keeps for each Scout. These credits can be used to offset costs of Summer Camp and other expenses as approved by the Troop Committee.
Camporee- District campout. Troops & Patrols compete in Scout Skills.
Chuck box Large wooden box containing patrol cooking gear.
Cima- see El Rancho Cima
Closet - Where scouts store Troop and Patrol gear. Cleaning out the closet means organizing the gear.
Court of Honor- formal Troop meeting that recognizes advancements, achievements, and sees the swearing in of new Troop and Patrol Leaders. (p. 21)

Downtown- (archaic) the Sam Houston Area Council office, which used to be located in downtown Houston before the new building was constructed on the North Loop.
El Rancho Cima- a Scout Camp near Wimberley, Texas
Fast Start- self-study video that addresses the Troop Committee, Troop meetings and the Outdoor Program.
Friends of Scouting- (FOS) annual fundraising drive, primarily benefits the Council. (p. 12)
GAD- Golden Arrow District
Gilwell- short for Gilwell Park in England, site of the first
Wood Badge class.
International Scout Time- Troop 80 slang for 7:30 PM
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills- Scouter training. Weekend is spent learning basic skills such as compass work, knots, fire building, nature study etc.
Jamboree a worldwide gathering of Scouts.
Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) worldwide gathering of Scouts by way of ham radio. Scouts can talk to others around the world.
K.P. Kitchen Patrol, cleanup after a meal.
Leader Specific Training- basic training for Scouters, focuses on training for a particular function such as Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Member.
Merit Badge Counselor- a volunteer who guides a Scout in the completion of a certain skill, leading to the earning of a merit badge.
New Leader Essentials- basic Scouter training
Order of the Arrow- BSA honor & service organization. Scouts and Scouters can be members.
Old Goat- another term for Adult Leader
Patrol Leaders council (PLC)- a meeting of the boy leaders. It is chaired by the Senior Patrol Leader and attended by the Patrol Leaders of each patrol and the Troop Guide(s). It is used to discuss past campouts and plan for the next month. (p. 6,13)
Patrol- a group of boys of similar age. The patrol eats, sleeps, plans together. Several patrols form a troop.
Patrol Corners - time set aside to organize the patrol & its equipment
Patrol Method- method of organizing the troop. The Scouts work together as a patrol, allowing the boys to learn to live and work together to accomplish tasks.
Philmont - 137,493 acre Scout camping area in New Mexico. The Crown jewel of Scout camps.
"Pulling a card" obtaining permission from the Scoutmaster to begin work on a merit badge.
Quality Unit- patch that the Troop earns after meeting certain quality criteria.
Quartermaster- 1) person in charge of equipment. 2) person in charge of cooking at a campout.
Roundtable- District meeting of Scouters to share ideas, information and fun.
Scouter- 1) a registered adult leader. 2) the name of the SHAC newsletter
Scout Fair- annual event that showcases every Pack, Troop and Crew in the Sam Houston Area Council. SHAC's Scout Fair is the largest in the U.S.
Scouting for Food- annual food collection drive
Scoutmaster- Adult Leader in charge of the Scouting program (p. 17)
Scoutmaster Conference- a meeting between the Scoutmaster and a Scout, usually used to determine if the Scout is ready for promotion. (p. 20)
Scout Skills- Fire building, nature study, First Aid, cooking and other skills in which a Scout will show proficiency.
Scout Sunday- a Sunday (usually sometime in February) when the Troop is joined by the Cub Scouts, Venture Scouts and Girl Scouts for Mass at St. Francis de Sales church.
SHAC- Sam Houston Area Council
Tour Permit a form that gives permission for the Troop to camp or hold an activity that is not on Troop, District or Council premises. It is filled in by the Troop (usually the Transportation Coordinator) and approved by the Council two weeks before travel.
Troop Assembly- forming the Troop for activities, announcements, etc.
Troop Committee Group of adults that guides the Troop and provides support for functions that the Scouts cannot perform, such as transportation, accounting, adult training, and advancement, etc.
Troop Committee Challenge- Leader Specific Training for Committee members.
Troop Leaders Council (TLC)- a meeting of the boy leaders. It is chaired by the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and attended by the Troop Leaders such as Quartermaster, Historian, Librarian, Chaplain's Aide etc.. It is used to discuss the support functions for which these leaders are responsible.
Unit Commissioner- District representative, acts as an advisor for the Scoutmaster.
Wood Badge- Highest training program available to Scouters.
A Scouter must earn his or her "Trained" patch for his
or her particular role (Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Troop
Committee) before applying for Wood Badge.
