Service Projects

Service Projects are required for advancement to Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle ranks. Service projects must produce a meaningful service not normally expected of Scout as a part of his school, religious, or community activities. The following are some guidelines for service projects:

1. Service projects must be approved in advance by the Scoutmaster.
2. The Scout should initiate the project himself rather than choosing from a list provided by others.
3. The service project should benefit the community as a whole. A project will not be approved if it is done to benefit a Boy Scout property or activity. A service project may not be performed for a business, be of a commercial nature, or be a fundraiser.
4. Scouts are expected to perform service for their sponsoring organization whenever asked. Participating in Troop sponsored service projects for Saint Francis de Sales Church may count toward rank advancement if approved by the Scoutmaster.
5. A project for which the Scout earns other credit is not likely to be allowed for rank advancement. For instance, if the Troop 80 is trying to earn an award by doing a particular project, the individual Scout should not expect the same hours of work to count toward his rank advancement.
6. Doing a service for an individual should usually be considered a "good turn" which Scouts are expected to perform daily.
7. For higher ranks, Service projects should be more significant, more original in concept, and more durable in results. Eagle rank service projects have specific requirements that will be explained in the Eagle advancement package.
