Advancement

Procedure

The Boy Scout Handbook lists all of the requirements for Rank Advancements and Eagle required Merit Badges. As the Scout completes the requirements, they must be signed off on his Merit Badge Card by his Merit Badge Counselor or in his Handbook by an Adult Leader. To avoid a potential conflict of interest, a parent does not sign off for his/her own son unless the parent is a registered Adult Leader and teaches the lesson to other Scouts in addition to their own son . Then the Scout must take his Merit Badge Card or Handbook to the Advancement Chair to have the achievement recorded on the Troop records.

When a Scout has completed all of the requirements for a Rank Advancement, he must ask for a Scoutmaster's Conference. The Scoutmaster will review what the Scout has achieved and, if he is satisfied that the requirements have all been met, will approve him for a Board of Review.

The Scout will then schedule a Board of Review with the Advancement Chair. When the Scout is approved for advancement by the Board of Review, he must again take his Handbook to the Advancement Chair to have the achievement recorded on the Troop Records.

Troop 80 is training the Scouts to be leaders. Please note it is the responsibility of the Scout, not the parent, to schedule the various conferences..

Awards, Badges, and Advancements will be presented to the Scout at a Troop meeting shortly after they are recorded on the Troop records. Twice a year, generally in October and March, the Troop will hold a Court of Honor to give public recognition to the Scouts for what they have earned since the last Court of Honor. This is a very important event for the Scouts, and all members of the Scout's family are encouraged to attend.

If the Scout is to receive a rank advancement, the Troop requires that one of his parents, or a prearranged substitute, stand with the Scout when he receives his award.

Scouts must be in full "Class A" uniform with neckerchief and merit badge sash (if merit badges have been earned) when attending a Court of Honor.
